Skógafoss with Lupine

Beginning last year, we moved our Iceland tours from August to June to take advantage of the abundant birdlife and wildflowers, particularly the lupine. Lupine is not native to Iceland and in fact, the seeds were brought over from Alaska. In 1945, a botanist named Hákon Bjarnason visited Alaska to select plants he thought would thrive in Iceland’s harsh conditions to prevent erosion and dust storms. He returned with a collection of seeds, including lupine, and from there it thrived and can now be found over much of the country. Pictured here is Skógafoss, likely the most photographed waterfall in Iceland, with our guest Natasha capturing various angles of the scene.

We’ll be leading our next Iceland tour in June of 2026. Please stay tuned for details and me if you are interested in joining one of our adventures. We still have spaces for Namibia this October, New Zealand in November, Arctic Norway in March 2025, and more…

Cheers!

Lupine in Bloom, Westman Islands

The lupine was blooming all over Iceland. What I love about these images from the Westman Islands is the juxtaposition with the volcanic rock. We were standing on a lava flow from an eruption in the early 1970's. The town was mostly spared, no lives were lost (everyone was evacuated to the mainland), and someone came up with the brilliant idea of spraying cold seawater on the lava to stop the flow, thus saving their harbor from being closed off...

We will be leading another Iceland tour next June. Please message me if you are interested or visit our site: www.natexpotours.com

Redwing in Lupine, Iceland

Redwing near Skogafoss, Iceland.

The blooming lupine is abundant in Iceland in early summer. When I saw a redwing land on this fencepost, I decided to go back later to try capture the image I had visualized. I was zoomed out to 400 mm and stopped down to f/16 to get ample detail in the lupine.

We will be back in Iceland next June to lead a tour with Nat Expo Tours. In addition to the wildflowers, the birdlife is prolific this time of year...

Happy Independence Day!

White Lupine

Buenas dias! Happy Monday and first day of July! Last week I ventured out in search of a small patch of white lupine, thanks to a tip from a good friend. I was successful in my quest, marking the first time I have encountered this rare wildflower.

Also, I have 4 spaces left in my summer digital photography class at the Eagle River Nature Center (Alaska) on Sunday, July 21. Cost is $75 and limited to 10 people. Follow the link to register: https://www.ernc.org/courses/digital-photography-workshop

Feel free to share and thank you for following along!

Lupine Sunset

Last night I decided to take a drive out of Eagle River Valley and check out the lupine blooming along Turnagain Arm as the sun was setting through the haze of wildfires. While the smoke and dry weather is creating interesting sunsets, the air quality is poor and I hope the fires are under control soon.

Thank you for following, now let's get out and start doing some rain dances!
