Volcano Video

After lying dormant for more than 800 years, Fagradalsfjall began erupting in March of 2021. This video was taken on August 14, the day we arrived in Iceland along with 6 of the 8 guests on our first tour. This was a bonus excursion for those who arrived early, and everyone was thrilled to have this experience.

Fire on the mountain!

Checking in from Iceland where we were able to witness and photograph Fagradalsfjall Volcano along with 6 of our guests who showed up early for the first tour. Needless to say, everyone was thrilled to experience this once in a lifetime opportunity!

I'll be posting more in the coming days as we have time to edit but right now, our days are filled with travel and incredible experiences.

August 2020 Iceland Tour Postponed

Well, last week we got word that Iceland will not be allowing visitors from the US at this time. Prior to then it seemed they were going to add us to the list of countries who are welcome but their government ultimately decided to follow the same plan for reopening as the EU and with the number of rising Covid-19 cases here, we do not meet the criteria. Michael L Haring and I had not choice but to postpone the August tour until 2021, which is disappointing but also completely understandable. The good news is that all of our guests are on board for next year and once things look more promising, we will nail down the dates for August of 2021 so please stay tuned for that!

All the best,

Colin

Whale Watching in Northern Iceland

Hello from Akureyri, on the north coast of Iceland! I've had two successful days of whale watching up here. Yesterday I took a tour out of Húskavik with Salka Whale Watching, where we had some great encounters with a minke whale. Today I decided to give it another shot and see if my luck would continue on a cruise out of Hauganes with Whale Watching Hauganes. Within 30 minutes I spotted the first whale - a humpback! Again, we had some wonderful and very close interactions. I certainly plan to include cruises with each company on the August 2020 Iceland Photo Tour itinerary!

I will be posting details for the August 2020 Iceland Photo Tour later this year, once all the details are worked out. In the meantime, I am also leading a tour in Cuba in February 2020. If you or anyone you know is interested, please follow/share this link: https://www.colintyler.com/phototours-and-classes

Thank you!

"Íslensk Ást - Icelandic Love"

On my way to explore a canyon in the highlands yesterday I took a short detour and came upon a group of horses along the road with a nice background and autumn color. I wasn't there long when this beautiful moment occurred, proving once again that timing is everything. For the record, these horses were not baited but they certainly were rewarded...with carrots.

Interested in joining me on an Iceland photo tour in August of 2020? Stay tuned for details later this year!

Vatnajökull Glacier

Vatnajökull Glacier - Europe's largest glacier. I stopped here two days ago on a beautiful afternoon along the east coast of Iceland. Had the forecasts for aurora and weather looked more promising, I would have stayed in hopes of capturing the lights over the ice lagoon. Turned out I made the right decision by continuing northward but I will always keep this location in mind for future tours

More to come soon from the Eastern Highlands including massive waterfalls and naturally, Icelandic horses. As always, thank you for following along!

Seljiandsfoss Waterall

Hello from Seljiandsfoss - another of Iceland's most popular and accessible waterfalls, not to mention one that you can walk behind!

I stopped here yesterday after ferrying back to the mainland from the Westman Islands, where I had a (mostly) sunny day to conclude my brief visit to Vestmannaeyjar. There were still a few puffins on the islands but many have left for the season.

I am currently driving the famous Ring Road around the entirety of Iceland. This evening I ended up in the town of Höfn in the Eastfjords and am continually in awe of the landscape, which makes it difficult to narrow down all the ideas for next year's tour!

As always, thank you for following my journeys.

Gullfoss Waterfall

Halló frá íslandi! (Hello from Iceland). I landed in Keflavik early this morning and have been trying to reorient myself to the changes in both time and landscape. After soaking in thermal spring pools in Selfoss, I made my way over to the famous Gullfoss Waterfall - without a doubt the most impressive waterfall I have ever seen!

After Gullfoss I headed south and ended up in Hvolsvöllur for the night. Tomorrow I am scheduled to go out to the Westman Islands with a puffin & volcano boat tour on Sunday morning but the weather forecast is looking rough so the ferry may not be running.

This journey is a research mission to plan photo tours for next year. Stay tuned and, weather permitting, I'll continue to share images and experiences as I go!

Thank you,

Colin

Happy Unicorn Day!

It has come to my attention that April 9 is Unicorn Day (it's a real thing, check it out: https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/unicorn-day/). I've said before that I believe in love, I believe in magic, and I sure believe in unicorns, which is why I was able to capture this image near Hofsós on the northern coast of Iceland last year.

Have a magical day and be sure to mark your calendars for the next big holiday - Hug a Sheep Day, celebrated annually on the last Saturday in October (also a real thing: https://happydays-365.com/…/national-hug-a-sheep-day-octob…/)

Happy 2019!

For a year that began with no travel plans, 2018 quickly turned into one of my most adventuresome thus far. February found me in Cuba 🇨🇺 for the first time, which set the stage for further spontaneous and far-flung excursions including the Big Island of Hawaii to photograph the Kilauea Volcano eruption, Washington state for a yoga 🧘‍♂️ retreat, and finally a quick visit to Iceland 🇮🇸 in September. I look forward to the magic that 2019 will bring in the way of new experiences and explorations.

May your intentions manifest in the New Year and as always, thank you for following along!

Colin

PS – I can still add one more person or possibly a couple to my second Cuba Photo Tour, which begins in Havana on Saturday, February 16, 2019. Details here: https://www.colintyler.com/phototours-and-classes/. Please message me if you are interested.

Icelandic Horses

I arrived in Hosfós, Iceland on the afternoon of what was my final day in-country and knew immediately that was where I would remain until nightfall, exploring the area and soaking up the north coast sunshine. One of my favorite subjects turned out to be the many horses in and around the town, something that Icelanders seem to take great pride in. I had envisioned an image with the ocean as a strong element in the background and am very pleased with what I captured that day.

Have a magical Monday out there and thank you for following along!

More Aurora from Iceland

I was editing through photos from my Iceland trip last night and came across this eery aurora image taken on the foggy drive from the north coast back to Reykjavik. It was a short, action-packed trip and I am just now catching up on sleep and settling back into this time zone. I was able to use the long flights to work on senior portraits and create my Cuba slideshow, which I presented last night at the Anchorage REI store. I had another person register for the February 2019 Cuba Tour after the program, so it looks like I’ve only got one spot left!

If you are interested in joining me in Cuba this coming February, details can be found here: http://www.colintyler.com/phototours-and-classes/

Gracias!

Colin

Iceland Aurora

Well, apparently the Norse gods are smiling upon me because I couldn't possibly leave Iceland without seeing the aurora. We were under clouds during a big display a couple nights back but I did manage to get a few shots on my overnight drive from the north coast back to Reykjavik - I captured this image on the edge of Reykjavik just a couple hours ago. Now I begin the long journey home. Many thanks to William Janecek and KB Tambo Travel for including me on this adventure. Until next time, Iceland, ha det bra!

Mountain Biking Iceland

Hello from Akureyri, Iceland! We made a long drive over the country yesterday, stopping for a quick hike/bike up to a glacier for photos with KB Tambo Travel. The weather has been rainy and from what I'm seeing from my friends back home in Alaska, I missed out on some nice auroras last night. Despite the wet weather, our spirits aren't dampened and we were able to come away with a few nice mountain bike images. Have a great day out there, wherever you are on the globe!

Cheers!

Halló frá Íslandi - Hello from Iceland!

Hello from Iceland - where giant waterfalls are abundant and off-road driving takes on a whole new meaning! I arrived early yesterday and will be here until Thursday. It was a very spontaneous trip to meet a friend and help scope out new locations for his mountain bike tours, which also gave me an opportunity to explore Iceland for the first time and research/plan future photo tours here. I will be posting when I am able. As always, thank you for following along!

Takk (thank you),

Colin
